What is Thread Count and Does It Matter?

what is thread count

When it comes to buying linen, it can be overwhelming when faced with thread count, fibres and other materials to choose from. Some people say the higher the number, the better the quality – but why does that matter and is it true?

WHAT EXACTLY IS THREAD COUNT?

The thread count of a sheet is the number of threads that are woven together in a square inch – a universal measurement in the world of bedding and linen. When choosing the correct bedding, aim for a luxurious fabric (like cotton) with a higher thread count, over something like polyester. Not only does this allow you to retain heat during the colder months, it will allow a softer surface for your skin, as well as being durable and lasting a lifetime, if properly cared for.

LUXURY SHEETS?

When looking at thread count, aim for both quality and quantity – if the product being threaded is not high quality, this is the same for your bedding. If you’re after luxury sheets, a great range of thread count to stick to is 800 to 1000. “The quality of the actual threads – what they are made from and what type of threads they are – should be the main point of consideration, not just how many of them there is.” (Sealy Posturepedic).  While having more threads allows a level of durability, you want to make sure you are buying a premium sheet to begin with. Want something breathable? Aim for Egyptian cotton or plain cotton sheets. Mixed material sheets in cotton/polyester blends or flannel sheets are great for the winter months when you need to retain heat.

WHAT IS PERCALE AND SATEEN?

Mixed in with thread counts is also the threading style. Two of the more common terms you might come across are Percale and Sateen, which are both types of sheet weaving styles. Percale means that the threads of the sheet are woven in a ‘hessian’ style method, with each string going over and under each other, similar to a woven bag. Sateen, however, is a four over, one under pattern – allowing more structure and a shinier look to the sheet.

SO DOES THREAD COUNT REALLY MATTER?

Yes and No. Firstly, look for a higher quality material that will be durable, and then aim for a middle to high range thread count that will match the quality of your fabric – anything higher than 1000 is a no-go, so aim for around 800 for the perfect night’s sleep.
