5 tips for styling your quilt cover with cushions
Giving your room a makeover? Cushions are the perfect way to dress up your bedroom and energise your space. Whether you are a ‘throw it all together’ bed maker or someone who preens their bedsheets meticulously, adding cushions can help to create a theme that works for you – regardless of how long you spend making it in the morning.
START WITH YOUR BED.
The focal point of any bedroom is, of course, the bed. By starting with the basics (a good quilt cover, matching pillowcases and a headboard), you will be able to draw from already-existing colour schemes and textures when adding your cushions.
Whether you have a single or a king, cushions add dimension and layers that attract the eye and create a more inviting environment, but don’t go too far. The smaller the bed, the less cushions you’ll need. Three cushions are perfect for single or double beds, while up to six cushions can be a great way to dress up a king size.
Plan your colour scheme.
Like any good decorating rule, sticking to a clear colour scheme will ensure everything ties in together. With cushion decorations, choosing a main hue to match your quilt cover is a simple way to add creative flair. A fun option for dressing up a minimalistic room is to add a pop of colour– try a maroon or a mustard for something autumnal or try out different textures to add further style and differentiation. The choice is yours!
Size is important – and so are pillows!
Now you’ve chosen your colour scheme, it is time to pick the size. There are a range of sizes to consider when it comes to cushions and pillows –standard, queen, king and a European square. Decorative cushions usually come in Boudoir or Square sizes, so there are so many to choose from.
Pillows that you are going to be used for sleeping are best calculated by the height of the user – the taller the individual, the larger the pillow that they’ll need to sleep with. Don’t discount decorative pillows either – they come in a range of different sizes – smaller, larger, square or even round. There are so many great ways to dress up a bedroom.
Layer them up.
Every designer knows just one cushion won’t do. Layering allows you to elevate your bedroom style while keeping things fresh. If you have a single bed, opt for three European Square pillows, while if you have a double bed, aim for traditional (rectangular) pillows, so it doesn’t look crowded.
If you lap in luxury with a Queen or a King-sized bed, decorating with pillows is easy, as you have so much space to play with. We love layering pillows into a six configuration – three rectangular pillows at the back, two European Square pillows in the middle and then a decorative pillow in the front.
Finally, have fun with it!
Half of the joy of decorating is being able to switch things up and re-decorate depending on your mood, season and vibe of the room you want to create. We can’t wait to see what you discover.
