Adding colour to the bedroom - our design expert tells you how

Nothing says summer like adding a splash of colour to your bedroom.  Whether you’re looking for a muted palette with primary colours, or you’re after a statement piece – there is the perfect shade for everyone. This month we speak to Liz, our Logan & Mason designer, about how to make your space pop!

Make your bed the focal point

Your bed is the star of the bedroom and Liz agrees that dressing your bed is a great way to play with colours and textures. If you are going for a minimalistic look, add a pop of colour or some ruffles in your linen, or use white linen to make a smaller room appear larger and lighter. Another key point that she notes is often overlooked is your manchester. Although most people lean towards white, grey or beige sheets – there is something to be said about muted earthy tones like mustard or green that can add a subtle point of difference without being overbearing.

Don’t be afraid to get creative

With the new thrill of seasonal shopping, colour can be a great way to add an on-trend piece to your bedroom, but if in doubt, choose muted shades that are more timeless compared to loud patterns.

Liz notes that this year’s summer season is going to be inspired by all things nature: “we have used a variety of lilacs, blues (like navy and aqua), neutral pinks and greens this season. We love prints, so we tend to use the whole gamut of colour with our panel printed designs”.

Styling is important too

“Forget about matching everything – you can bring in different elements with texture too (linen blends, tufting, fur, sequins) – today is about you and your lifestyle.” Through styling, you can really amplify your personality and the mood of the space you want to create. “A bed with a matched back and cushions can create a great atmosphere, or a simple chair in a corner with a cushion and rug can help you create a coordinated look for less. We love this blogpost from Yes Please Blog about the best positioning for your rug in your bedroom. If you’re handy with a hammer – that’s great – but remember, you can also prop mirrors or an oversized canvas against a wall.” Most importantly, Liz suggests to display things in your space that are about you and your life, like pictures or souvenirs.

Reverse it!

When shopping, a great tip from Liz is to shop for prints that also have a reverse option – for example – a green nature print with a pastel green on the underside of the quilt cover. This allows you another colourway to play with when you feel like an update. “When looking for quilt covers and sets, look for those that have different prints or textures on the reverse – that is what we love about our Logan & Mason prints and accessories. You can have the reverse on show to give you a pattern clash, which is popular right now.”

Don’t be afraid to mix it up

Another fun way to bring some colour to your room is reusing previous quilt covers. Folding them in half and adding them as a bed runner to contrast a monochrome bedspread or throwing some brightly coloured pillows or throw blankets to redesign the room.

Don’t forget decor

Try hanging some pendant lighting from your ceiling or add a floor lamp for something different. The warmer months encourage us to get out into nature, so why not propagate your own plants to bring into your room. Plant styling, flowers and even large flowered leaves allow you to mix up the look and feel of your room, plus, one of Liz’s favourite ways of styling – “My favouring pairings to work with is anything you see from nature, whether that be out in the bush, a coastal swim, a desert or a stormy sky. Nature knows what is best when it comes to colour”.

So, what colour does Liz recommend?

“Anything! The summer light will make even darker designs feel refreshed. Pair something dark with white or neon pastels to give it a lift. This season, we are loving botanical colours – think green and pink tones. We’re also missing tropical island getaways, so shades of blue are making a splash – from navy right through to aqua – there is a shade of blue for everyone.”
